Yes, sweet tea can go bad. The right storage depends on whether you have an unopened shelf-stable bottle, an opened bottle, or tea brewed at home. Those are different products with different storage needs.

Our real-brewed bottled iced tea is shelf-stable while unopened. Keep sealed bottles in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. Follow the best-by date and storage directions printed on your bottle. Refrigeration before opening is optional for serving it cold, not a requirement for unopened shelf-stable bottles.

The unopened shelf life does not apply after the seal is broken. A best-by date is also not a guarantee for a bottle that has been damaged or stored improperly.

After opening a bottle

Refrigerate after opening, keep the bottle closed between servings, and follow the bottle’s instructions for how soon to finish it. Do not use unopened shelf-life guidance for an opened bottle.

Pour into a clean glass rather than leaving the bottle open during a meal or gathering. Avoid leaving opened tea in a warm car or in direct sunlight.

Tea brewed at home

Homemade iced tea and tea brewed from bags are not shelf-stable like a commercially sealed bottle. Use clean equipment, keep the finished tea refrigerated, and prepare amounts you can enjoy promptly.

When to discard tea

Discard tea with visible mold, an unexpected sour or fermented smell, a leaking or swollen container, or a damaged seal. If the bottle’s storage directions have not been followed or you are unsure about its safety, do not drink it.

Do not taste tea to test whether it has spoiled. Appearance and smell alone cannot guarantee that a drink is safe.

Does every bottled tea need refrigeration before opening?

A drink mixed with fresh fruit, herbs, or other ingredients is no longer the original sealed product. Keep the prepared drink refrigerated and do not apply the bottle’s unopened shelf life to it.
